Partner Poses

In a class where students have already formed comfortable personal interactions with each other, some teachers may be interested in using partner poses to deepen the bond between students, encourage team-building, and add variety. Teachers should take care to consider whether such poses are appropriate if both genders are in the class, if students are from different cultures, or if awkward social interactions already exist in the group. They may even want to talk first with individual students to assess their comfort level with touching and being touched. While yoga is most often and most effectively used as a personal and introspective practice, the interest in socialization among many adolescents may mean a greater willingness to participate if the atmosphere is fun and friendships are fostered in a healthy way.

If students are interested and willing to participate in such a class, partner poses often allow students to move into longer, deeper, and more comfortable stretches. Many teens will enjoy the social interaction and fun atmosphere that is built through partner poses, while they will also develop the skill of learning to work together with someone they might not yet know very well. Working together as partners builds bonds between members of the music studio, increasing motivation and an atmosphere of collaboration rather than competition. It is best, if possible, to choose students of similar stature and weight, and teachers probably want to partner students of the same gender. The partner poses mentioned in chapter 4, including “open heart,” “elevator,” and “seesaw,” are options with an older group of students as well.
